Pepco Pakistan , electric company fails to stop power theft

Power theft in Pakistan is very rampant and the authorities like Pepco, Iesco and Pesco have been unable to stop or decrease it significantly due to collusion of their employees with the thieves.

Lately it has been admitted by Pesco on Friday that the every 100 units of electricity supplied by the it to its consumers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 19 units are stolen.

The officials told that power theft was rampant in Peshawar, Charsadda, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Karak, Tank, Hangu, Battagram and Kohistan districts.They further said Pesco suffered more than half of its line losses in these districts alone.

Forests in Pakistan , on decline

For years, it was a lonely if mighty cause, for apart from Afghanistan, in the grip of a 10-year war between Taliban insurgents and American troops, no other country in Asia suffers from a faster rate of deforestation than Pakistan though it had forest density already very low of the standard minimum threshold of 5% of the total land.

In 2010, it was declared a forest-deficient country because just 2.21% or about 1.72 million hectares (4.2 million acres) of its land mass is forested.

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Pakistan lost an average of 42,000 hectares of forest a year between two decades1990 and 2010 as rate of cutting of tress is far faster than plantation of new trees.

At the current rate, Pakistan could lose half its remaining forest cover over the next decade or so, says the FAO. The trend has been exacerbated by recent floods, the worst in the country’s history in 2010 and a repeated bout this monsoon season along with cutting trees for fuel and economic reasons.

Mangroves in Pakistan , Tahir Qureshi fights for

Tahir Qureshi, a senior Pakistani environmentalist and advisor on coastal ecosystems with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is currently fighting for the conservation and preservation of ecosystem and especially mangrove forests of Pakistan. He needs cooperation help and support of all those who understand the importance of preservation of ecosystem. Though the awareness is not as much as it should be in our country on this issue and so many other issues of importance as the literacy rate is very very low here when compared even to the very underdeveloped countries of the world. Anyhow those who understand must come forward and play their role for themselves and for their coming generations.
Tahir Qureshi has helped rehabilitate 30000 hectares of mangrove forest along the southern coast on the Arabian Sea, including in Baluchistan, one of Pakistan’s most violent and inhospitable areas, home  to a separatist uprising .

Masood Sharif Khattak joined Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI)

Former Intelligence Bureau chief Major (Retd) Masood Sharif Khattak  has  joined PTI on this Friday. He had resigned from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in 2007. He resigned some time before Benazir was killed . He was against any deal with General Musharaf under NRO and safe exit for the dictator so left PPP though in the elections 2008 PPP had a good chance to win and he could get some good lucrative position but he prefered to resign on principles.
