Pakistan Council for Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) lately pointed out that 79% water samples in rural areas of Punjab are unsafe and unhygienic to drink and only 21% samples were safe when compared with Pakistan Standard and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA). This is very very high percentage when compared to even the poorest nations of the world.
According to sources in PCRWR, water quality monitoring in rural ares of tweleve districts of Punjab was conducted recently.
Water samples were found unsafe and unhygienic in Attock were 89%,Bahawalpur 93%, Faisalabad 90%,Gujranwala 75%, Gujrat 84%, Kasur 79%, Lahore 69%,Multan 94%, Rawalpindi 83%, Sargodha 88%, Sheikhupura 65%, while in Sialkot 55%.
Important water quality parameters and criteria that is bacteriological contaminations,turbidity,total dissolved solids,nitrate,Flouride and Arsenic crossed PSQCA water quality standards in the samples of the rural areas of Punjab Province.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa( KP)93% water samples were unsafe and only 7% samples in rural areas of KP were safe that is very very alarming picture.
According to official figures available, 99% water samples in Abbottabad, 80% in Mardan,93% in Mingora while 97% samples in Peshawar were found unhygienic to drink while 72% water samples in rural areas of Sindh were found unsafe when compared to PCRWC.
