The principal secretary to the prime minister issued instructions regarding evening classes at public and private medical and dental colleges all over Pakistan, despite strong opposition by some stakeholders, through a letter (No 1014/PSPM/2011) dated June 15 to the federal health ministry to make arrangements for evening classes at public and private medical and dental colleges across the country.
Earlier, a similar directive had been issued by President Asif Ali Zardari , but the University of Health Sciences, the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council and medical associations of the country opposed the directive and the plan was dropped then However, this time the federal govt was involved directly and a clear message was conveyed to the PMDC by the federal health ministry.
In a letter (No F.16-14/2011-MER) dated June 27, Health Deputy Director General Dr Arshad K Chandio said to the PMDC registrar: “I have the honour to refer the PM’s Secretariat letter (No 1014/PSPM/2011) dated June 15, 2011 on the subject and to say that the principal secretary to the prime minister has desired that the case regarding evening shift in medical colleges may be placed before the council for appropriate action.”
The source of Daily Dawn told that the PMDC had ‘secretly’ finalised its decision to allow some private medical colleges to start evening shift as a ‘pilot project’ and an announcement in this regard was expected in a couple of weeks.
